Paul Parker, Young District Agronomist for NSW Department of Primary Industries is organising a one day Climate Workshop for farmers at Young Bowling Club this Tuesday, July 8.
"The more information farmers have the knowledge to access and interpret, the better equipped they are to manage risk in both cropping and grazing," Mr Parker explained.
Michael Cashen, Project Officer on Climate Risk Management with NSW DPI will present the workshop aiming to assist farmers to better understand weather, climate variability and change, and improve their skills in climate risk management.
Participants will learn to read and interpret weather maps, use historic climatic data and review climatic information sources and references.
"Meteorologists are moving away from statistical historical analysis these days and into dynamic modelling using far more data such as ocean temperatures," Mr Parker said.
Farmers will examine the relevance of the Southern Oscillation Index, Indian Ocean Dipole and Southern Annular Mode to rainfall in the Young area, observe and discuss short and long term forecasts, assess climate and weather risk and develop appropriate management plans.
"In particular, the long term forecasts are becoming quite accurate up to three months out and are very relevant for farmers considering cropping, pastures and flock sizes," Mr Parker said.
"My hope is that farmers will walk away with a better understanding of exactly what makes it rain in this region.
"That and a better understanding of how to interpret the huge amount of climate information that is actually freely available to us," Mr Parker added.
The workshop runs from 9am to 4pm on Tuesday at a cost of $30 per person. It is essential that people wishing to attend contact NSW DPI Young Office by this Friday July 4 to register.
