Hazy mornings and evening rains in store
The Star, July 8, 2008
THE sky looked moderately clear throughout the day in Penang yesterday although a slight haze was recorded.
A state meteorological department spokesman said visibility dipped to as low as 3km in Butterworth at 8am while Prai and Bayan Lepas had visibility levels of 9km and 6km respectively.
The visibility level only improved to 5km in Butterworth at about 3pm while Prai and Bayan Lepas shared the same level at 7km.
The spokesman said the weather had been cloudy the last few days with isolated showers in the afternoon.
She said the mornings were hazy due to water vapour and dust particles in the air.
“The slight haze is caused by the dust particles trapped in the water vapour. However, the evening rain will eventually clear the air and visibility will improve,” she said.
A check with the Department of Environment showed that the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings were good and moderate.
API readings recorded at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Prai and Seberang Jaya were 41, 48 and 58 respectively at 11am.
Over the next few days, rain is expected in the evenings.
API reading is considered good when the reading is between 0 and 50, moderate (51 to 100), unhealthy (101 to 200), very unhealthy (201 to 300), and hazardous (above 300).
